Most magickal teaching suggests that if you invoke the elements, you must also dismiss them at the end of your meditation, circle, divination or magick. Remember that any element out of balance or out of control may cause disturbances that are not only emotional or symbolic, but also physical and destructive. I remember being part of an informal circle that was interrupted while we were dismissing the Fire element. For days after, each person that had been in that circle noticed they received minor inadvertent burns much more frequently than they would have expected.
To dismiss the elements, thank each in turn, and bid them farewell. You may request that each leave with you some of their attributes. For instance, you may ask Air to leave your clear thought, Fire to leave you inspiration, Water to leave you the ability to love, and Earth to leave you prosperity.
Here is rhyming dismissal that you may use if you prefer.
Dismissal to the Quarters
Airs of East and winds that blow
To your watchtower you must go
Thank you for your presence here
Leave us with thought and reason clear.
Red flames of South that glow and burn
To your watchtower now return
Thank you for your sparks so bright
That leave our hearts and minds alight.
Beings of Water, Westward tide,
To your watchtower now abide
Leave us all your depths of love
As oceans swirl below, above!
Return Earth to Northward tower
Thank you for your strength and power
Leave us hope and leave us health
Bless our hearths, our homes, our wealth.
Through tarot divination and magick, through invocation and meditation and through physical, symbolic and spiritual connection, we are able to find elemental balance in our lives.
Through understanding the elements and their influences, we develop greater understanding of ourselves, and of our spiritual journey. As we see the correlations between the four elements and tarot, we develop a fuller understanding of tarot.
Correlations are drawn between tarot and many occult systems. It is unclear to tarot historians if the original tarot developers intended these correlations, although there is no historical evidence they did. It is possible, and even likely, that the neat fit of tarot and astrology, or tarot and the Kabalistic Tree of Life, is simply a happy coincidence. It is also true that many tarotists believe that this happy coincidence is part of a greater spiritual design created not by humans, but by the very spirit or spirits who speak through the tarot.
It is not necessary to know and understand every occult system that correlates with the tarot in order to be a great tarot reader. It would be difficult to have a true understanding of tarot without understanding the four elements of life.
